The Role of WeQuests in Learning a Foreign/Second Language

Webquest are a lesson format developed by Dr .Bernie Dodge. The activities and lesson that put in this webquest student don’t jut memorized but they are expected to take the information that they interact and create new information that has meaning to them. Student use the webquest to create meaningful project that they share with others. The focus in the webquest is on using the information rather than   looking for it.
Role of teacher:
The teacher will use this webquest to be more modern way to teach rather than tradition way because, webquest will increase student motivation. And when student are motivated, they are more thinking and active.
Role of student:
Student will use a real recourse from their life rather than using the text book or material that only presented from one point of view. The webquest will be enjoyable for the student and less formal. WebQuests give students a task that allows them to use their imagination and problem-solving skills. The answers are not predefined and therefore must be discovered or created. Students must use their own creative-thinking and problem-solving skills to find solutions to problems.
Class environment:
When the student use this webquest in class they feel active and a wake in another words they feel more free and they be more active and enjoy their time not only a regular class.
Critical thinking:
One of the key reasons for using WebQuests is that they prompt higher-level thinking. The questions posed to students require more than just finding and spitting back information. They must take the information they research and transform it into something else. Often students have to evaluate a variety of information sources that contain multiple opinions. Prior to the Web, it was difficult for teachers to provide resources with varying perspectives.
Student oriented activates:
In the webquest student will be working all the time. Also, they will can work with many topic not just one. And the important point that student will learn how to work with a group.

Cooperative/Collaborative learning and project-based learning:
WebQuests are often cooperative in nature, requiring students to take on roles where they are part of a team that must accomplish the task. They have to become experts on a certain topic and share this information with their group. They know their teammates are counting on them to contribute to the completion of the final task. Because they know their results will be shared with others in some format, often times on the Web, they know they have a real, sometimes worldwide audience.
WebQuests are also a wonderful way of capturing students' imagination and allowing them to explore in a guided, meaningful manner, "Communication, group work, problem solving, and critical and creative thinking skills are becoming far more important in today's world than having students memorize predetermined content."
As an ESL future teacher:
WebQuests, say the teachers who use them, promote high-level thinking, develops problem-solving skills, and provides an avenue for seamlessly integrating technology into the curriculum. And creating one is easier than you might think! Many sites are available to walk you through the process. As n ESL teacher in Saudi school I will use this webquest because, I want my student to think to create to open their mined I don’t want them to only memorize what I give them in class. Also, I want my student to creative and have the opportunity to put their goals in front of them. However, as a teacher  I encourage the all teacher that  not just use the school book to teach the student they need more than a school book that way they need to be more creative and that will happens when they tray with the Saudi school the webquest.

Suggestions:

In this website, we have several criticisms:

First, it needs more attractive layout to capture the attention of the learners.

Second, we suggest for this website to put attractive graphics and images to attract the users and to put more attractive background because the use of graphics and images can enhance readers understanding of the questions.

Third, it’s important to have lessons about learning vocabulary and grammar in this website, so the learners can benefit from the explanations of the lessons and solve the activities in more accurate way.

As Future English language teachers:

From the knowledge about website evaluation, we learned how to evaluate any website, and how to direct our students to a good website which is appropriate to their levels and will improve their skills.

Interactive language learning on the web

Learning the language on the web is available to anyone who has an access to the web. And every teacher who want to make her own web page and put exercises, quiz or activity they really need to be attractive and to suitable to the level of the student. There are many advantages to creating the teacher her/his own language learning activities in the web. These advantages include accessibility, renewability and adaptability.  The most problem to create an web page is  the teacher  find it difficult because he/she don't  have the technical  knowledge  to do that and the most of them lack in that. Also, they don’t have the time to learn this new skill.

However, the teacher needs to answer this question to the student before creating online activities.1. What type of computer and browser will they be using? 2. What is the connection speed at which they will be accessing activates?

Another thing that teacher should put in her/his mind is to meet accessibility guidelines for individual with disabilities so those students with special need are not left alone.

All of the student's needs for and teacher technical skills should be considering before design any online activity.  There are many skills the teacher can teach through web like vocabulary practice, grammar lesson, comprehension exercise, reading and writing tasks.

Learning through the web needs a really hard work from the teachers, also, it enjoyable for the student to use it to learning the language.

In the other hands, in Saudi schools the teachers don’t use this way of teaching but, we hope they tray in our school to use it with our students.

Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants .

a.     Who are Digital Immigrant teachers and Digital Native students as categorized by the author?
Digital Immigrant teachers is the people who were not born into the digital world but, have it in later in their live. And start to adopt or use it the technology in the late time of their live.
Digital native students are the people who use the digital language of computers, video games and internet. Also, they were born in the time the technology show.

b.     List down 3 differences between Digital Immigrant teachers and Digital Native students?

Digital Native students
Digital Immigrant teachers
The digital students used to receive the information very fast.
Immigrant teachers like to teach step- by-step.
The digital students prioritize random access.
They are very (serious) in the lesson time.
They chose games rather than be (serious) and work.
They acquired the skills through years of practice.

c.      What is meant by Digital immigrant accent? List down three examples of “digital immigrant accents.”

The immigrant  accent is can be seen in such things as reconciliation to the internet is not the first solution to solve or help in education process may be  can be a second solution for them of course.
For example:
1.   Needing to print out a document written on the computer In order to edit it.
2.   Printing out your email.
3.   Bringing people physically into your office to see an interesting website.

d.     According to the author, what is the biggest serious problem facing education today?

The biggest problem from the author view is the deep hole between the teachers and who use the old school way and the students who use technology. And those students find that the way that teachers used is old and boring.

e.      “Should the Digital Natives learn the old way, or should their Digital Immigrants learn the new?”

Unfortunately, the digital students can't back forward or the immigrant teachers can be a digital native. But, the immigrant can try to (walk with the river) on another word, to learn the new things in digital world and in same time try to teach the students with their style of teach.

f.      What should the Digital Immigrant educators really want to reach Digital Natives?

They will have to change and try to do it and as the Nike Motto of the digital generation says," Just do it". So, they will succeed with time but, they need more time to learn and to administrators to support them.
